Anointing of the sick
What is the sacrament?
Lord God, you have said to us through your apostle James, “Are there people among you who need anointed? Let them send for the priests of the church and let the priests pray over them anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save them. Whatever sins they have committed will be forgiven them.”
The Anointing of the Sick, along with Reconciliation, is a sacrament of healing. The sacrament is readily available for the elderly and dying, but also for anyone going through a significant change in life due to a health issue. While we hope for physical healing, the primary healing is for the recipient of this sacrament to know that Jesus Christ, fully human, sustains them in their struggle and journey towards wholeness.
An Emergency?
If a loved one is in immediate proximity to death and urgency needs the Last Rites, do not hesitate to reach out to the priests on the ‘emergency line.’ Hospice and Hospital Chaplains are also great resources to helping your family and loved one find a priest.
Planning for a Funeral?
Our Clergy and Parish Staff offer our sympathies as a loved one nears death or has already passed. Please reach out to your Funeral Home provider of choice and let them know your preferences for a Catholic Mass at St. Josephine Bakhita Parish. The Funeral Home will coordinate directly with the Parish Offices to confirm a date and time that works for everyone involved.
After the date is confirmed, the Parish Offices will reach out to begin the planning process for the mass. Pastors' Hall is usually available (some exceptions) for a luncheon after the funeral. St. Matthias Chapel is only available when School Students are not in session (Saturdays, Summer, Holidays, etc.).
If no Funeral Home is involved, please contact the Parish Offices directly.
